From August 28 to September 3, 2025, the Ministry of Fisheries of Fiji hosted a five-day fisheries legislation training in Suva facilitated by FFAs Deputy Director General. The training focused on Fiji’s Fisheries Act Cap. 158, the Offshore Fisheries Management Act 2012, and the Aquaculture Act 2024, with objectives to enhance understanding of international and regional treaties, strengthen knowledge of Fiji’s fisheries legislation, and improve the application of these laws. Participants included officials from various divisions of the Ministry of Fisheries and representatives from the Republic of Fiji Navy, all of whom completed a competency test. The training successfully improved participants’ understanding of relevant legislation, the powers of authorized officers, and skills in interpreting legislation, identifying offenses, and preparing charges. Additionally, a two-hour Continuing Legal Education workshop on “Recent developments in the Law of the Sea” was delivered to members of the Fiji Law Society.
