A PIRFO Trainer is a subject matter expert in Observer duties who is qualified to deliver accredited training. A key step on the path to becoming a PIRFO Trainer is to become a qualified trainer and assessor.
Two weeks face-to-face learning in Nadi saw the completion of 12 weeks hard study in training and assessment for a select group of Pacific Island Regional Fisheries Observers and Debriefers. With these new trainers FFA members are empowered to grow their national capacity to meet Observer obligations on board fishing vessels.
Observers are instrumental in gathering crucial data to help determine the tuna biomass, compliance to licence conditions and economic value of the stock.
The qualification programme was delivered by the University of the South Pacific (USP) and facilitated by the FFA in collaboration with the Pacific Community (SPC).
